what is medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program created for individuals age 65 and older, as well as certain younger people with medical conditions or disabilities. This program is divided into various parts, and it’s important to learn how these fit together.

MEDICARE PART A

Part A is your key to essential hospital coverage, helping you manage costs for inpatient care, skilled nursing, hospice, and home health services. It covers a cozy semi-private room during hospital stays. Just a friendly reminder: outpatient surgeries are under Part B.

The great news? Most people turning 65 qualify for Part A without any monthly premium, thanks to their contributions throughout their careers! Even if you don’t qualify for premium-free coverage, you have the option to secure it for a fee. Embrace this wonderful opportunity to protect your health and well-being!

MEDICARE PART B

Part B provides vital outpatient medical coverage that truly enriches your healthcare journey. It extends far beyond inpatient care, encompassing essential services such as lab tests, preventive screenings, ambulance rides, and outpatient surgeries.

One of the standout benefits of Part B is its assistance with expensive treatments, including cancer therapy and kidney dialysis, which can significantly ease financial burdens.

The premium is determined annually by Social Security and varies with income, so that higher earners might pay a bit more. Your modified adjusted gross income reported to the IRS will help establish your specific premium. Overall, enrolling in Part B is a fantastic step toward safeguarding your health and well-being!

MEDICARE PART C

PART C, or the MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PROGRAM, offers private insurance options tailored to your needs. Costs for Advantage plans vary by carrier, location, and chosen plan.

To enroll, you must be signed up for Parts A and B. Even with a low-premium Advantage plan, you'll still pay for Part B. Make sure you live in the plan's service area and sign up during the election period for smooth enrollment.

Once enrolled, your Medicare benefits will come directly from the Advantage plan, not the government. Remember, enrolling in Part C is voluntary. Some may prefer Original Medicare with Medigap plans instead. Choose what fits your lifestyle best!

MEDICARE PART D

Celebrate a significant milestone in healthcare! Medicare Part D, introduced in 2006, provides crucial prescription drug coverage for those aged 65 and older, after more than 50 years without it. Millions have enrolled to access necessary outpatient medications.

With Part D, you can choose the retail drugs you need, whether from a local pharmacy or through mail order. Most states offer about 30 different plans to select from. To find the best option for you, consider having your agent conduct a Part D analysis using Medicare's prescription drug finder tool. Take advantage of this opportunity for improved health and happiness!

Before choosing a plan, we want to be sure you know the difference between your options. In particular, how Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage Plans differ. Many people sign up for Advantage Plans thinking they are Supplements unfortunately, they are not.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLAN

A Medicare Advantage Plan is a fantastic health plan option provided by a private company that works closely with Medicare to offer you all your essential Part A and Part B benefits! These plans come in various forms, such as Health Maintenance Organizations, Preferred Provider Organizations, Private Fee-for-Service Plans, Special Needs Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. When you choose a Medicare Advantage Plan, your Medicare services are covered through this plan, not through Original Medicare. Plus, many of these plans even include prescription drug coverage to support your health needs!

MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT PLAN

Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance is a fantastic way to fill the gaps left by Original Medicare, covering costs such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Additionally, many Medigap policies provide coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn’t, such as medical care during your travels abroad. When you have Original Medicare alongside a Medigap policy, Medicare will first handle its portion of the approved costs, and then your Medigap insurance takes care of its share. This combination offers you greater peace of mind and makes navigating healthcare so much easier!
